You are receiving this message because we noticed that you previously voted in the Picture of the Year contest. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favourite images featured on Commons during the last year (2025) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
In this second and final round, you may vote for a maximum of five images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2025.
This year the U4C requires candidates to hold administrator rights on at least one wiki, which is why you are being contacted as you appear to hold this right. There are other requirements, such as candidates must be at least 18 years old and may not be employed by the Wikimedia Foundation or other related chapters and affiliates. You can find more information in the call for candidates on Meta-wiki. Additionally, the committee's working language is English; some ability to communicate in English is required.
The election opens on 18 May, if you are eligible and interested you have until 10 May to submit your candidacy. There will week between for candidates to answer questions from the community. Voting takes place privately in SecurePoll, successful candidates must receive at least 60% support. If you read over the material and consider yourself qualified, please consider submitting your name to run for the committee. If you think someone else in your community might be interested and qualified, please encourage them to run.

Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.
Here are your top three winning images:

I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.
Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!

Hi, I see you've done a bunch of work checking through "review needed" US BLM files such as File:Owyhee Complex (44153031715).jpg—thanks for helping out! I have a heads-up for you though: please be careful with sorting these files based on filenames and placenames only. Even unique placenames can be deceiving, since there can be a bunch of separate and non-overlapping events, areas, and designations referring to that placename.
Just for two examples: "Owyhee Complex" refers to a BLM [equine] herd management area (HMA) that covers the Nevada part of Owyhee Mountains/Owyhee River area (and more). Owyhee River Wilderness Area is fully located within Idaho, and Idaho has HMAs adjacent to Nevada, making the Owyhee Complex HMA files entirely misplaced in the Owyhee River Wilderness scope.
For wild/feral horse and burro related files (including general images of the environment, workers, observing public, equipment and facilities related to gathers, releases, holding, treatment, training, adoption, etc., related to them), it's best to sort them under the relevant HMA gather 20XX category (if related to a gather and a cat exists), the relevant HMA category (if it exists), or the relevant "Feral horses of/from X" or "Burros" category.

No problem. Happened upon another tricky example: File:180515-FS-Humboldt-EWM-004 (28302408538).jpg this foal is located at a holding facility in California, but originates in the Cold Creek area of Wheeler Pass HMA where she was gathered as an emergency gather. In any case, it's probably safe to create a category for any gather per area/year that has at least 5 files to throw in right away since there will almost certainly be more—gathers are a high public interest procedure, and get documented by both BLM workers and public observers. I'm slowly working to unify the gather category naming scheme to be "Target Area [Emergency] Gather 20xx", without HMA (gathers sometimes target subsections of HMAs). Once I'm done with that, no named gather category without a year will be secretly for a specific year. --Pitke (talk) 15:05, 14 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Now I don't know if the purpose of these "review needed" categories is simply to check weather the images are not copyright violations or to ensure they are actually properly curated/categorized on commons, but anyway I suggest adding something like {{Check categories}} to such images - because there are a lot of really good images, and when they are only in a single barely related category, no one is even going to find them when they're looking for such images using the category system, and I think the chance that someone will randomly come across them in such obscure categories and properly categorize them is also quite low. ~TheImaCow (talk) 22:59, 27 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@TheImaCow There is nothing stopping you or anyone else adding extra categories. I have no idea what the review category was for but files are just sitting there hidden away. How did you come to the conclusion that there's a consensus here? And isn't it sufficient reason that this is in a photo collection selected by the community for a formal project? Furthermore, how can what this user is saying be true? And frankly, he's never liked Wikinews, he is involved in many previous discussions, so this can't be think very neutral. @Gbawden You may just not be aware of this: Wikinews was soft closed; the deletion completely violated the spirit of the WMF's instruction spirits. Furthermore, especially the Chinese Wikinews community and temporary user groups still exist and are being updated, and they still have readership you can check. The WMF also, has been working with the Wikinews community to push for the establishment of a new website, WMF guy told me that preliminary results should be preliminary results in August. How can we only listen to half of what's said? Where is the consensus? hope for a swift restoration. Thank you Sheminghui.WU (talk) 02:16, 3 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
